Resources

Practice materials, belt information, forms, supplies, and reference content to help students review what they learn in class.

Practice

The best way to improve and learn is to practice — and then practice more. Repetition builds muscle memory so students can move with confidence, speed, and control. Practice a little each night between classes.

Review

The Resources page provides booklets, videos, and DVDs that can be reviewed at home. These materials let students review what was taught in class and then refine it with their instructor.

Warm-up

Always remember to stretch. Start slow and easy, then work toward bigger stretches and harder movements just like in class.

  • Waving and swinging arms
  • Slowly rotating and stretching neck
  • Touching toes standing and sitting
  • Rotating and bending knees and ankles
  • Spider-walk down leg to hold foot and extend leg
  • Crescents: in, out, single, and double
  • Situps and pushups
  • Fu jacks

Basics

Continue practicing your basics even after moving up in belts. The basics are the foundation of everything.

Belts and ranking

Testing is an optional but very important part of training, and students who plan to continue in the program should test when they are ready. Testing is usually done during the last two weeks of each course. The purpose of testing is to help students move to the next level of training, learn more advanced techniques, and receive recognition for progress.

Testing in the martial arts also builds confidence and self-esteem by teaching children to set goals, overcome doubt, achieve those goals, and then move on to more difficult ones.

Testing requirements vary according to age, ability, and level. The Low Yellow Belt, the first belt after White Belt, is intentionally approachable. Most young children pass unless they show disrespect. Students who need more time may test again later at no additional charge. After successful testing, the student receives a belt or sash with a patch and a certificate. High-level tests also include a medal.

Programs are individualized for each student, but the following reflects a typical progression. The minimum expectation is one additional form per level from the curriculum list. Low Yellow Belt students typically demonstrate basic blocks, punches, kicks, stances, and Basic T. High Yellow Belt students may also demonstrate the Blocking Combination, Four Elbows, Kick Combination, Stance Drill, and for age 8+, Basic One and Basic Sword. Each additional level adds new skills and forms based on the style of interest.

Before you test

Please fill out a Promotion Test Form and give it to your instructor prior to class.

Students, especially those at higher levels, should also be familiar with the Tenets of the Arts and the Student Pledge.
